Overlocker 101
Overlocker 101
Sunday 18 May 10.30-1.00pm
Tutor: Mel Forrest
Level - all levels
If you have an overlocker but you lack confidence when using it, this workshop is for you! An overlocker is a fantastic way of improving the finish of woven garments and because the stitches of an overlocker have a natural stretch, they are perfect for sewing entire jersey garments. However, with four spools of thread, two needles and more knobs and dials than a regular sewing machine they can be very intimidating to new stitchers! On this workshop Mel will explain all the essentials you need for overlocking in this class including:
Threading, adjusting tension and differential feed
Sewing curved edges, corners and hem-bands/cuffs
Replacing needles, adjusting stitch length and width
How to unpick!
To allow for individual attention, there are just 5 spaces on this course - book early to avoid disappointment.
Materials and equipment required
Bring your own overlocker and all the accessories included with it – the tweezers and screwdrivers are particularly important. Make sure you bring the instruction booklet/manual and the pedal and power cables.
Fabric: 50cm of pre-shrunk calico cut into 15cm (6-in) squares prior to the class
Optional: other fabrics. You’re welcome to bring along any other fabrics to play with, such as jersey or sweatshirting
Provided as part of your course fee are 4 x 1000m reels of Coats Moon thread. These are in different colours to help show you the difference between threads on the machine
If you’d like to buy more Coats Moon thread after the class, it will be available. Mel recommends this thread as it’s great value for money and comes in a wide range of colours. Refreshments will be provided at the workshop. For details of car parks in Rochester, please look at our Visit Us page.
