Looking for a quick make for a present? The Open Wide zip pouches, designed by Anna Graham, are a winner as they can be used as craft bags for sewists, make up bags for super stylish friends, or perhaps even a holiday pouch for all your essential cables and plugs. This project is a great way to use some of your treasured fabrics to make them personal to the lucky recipient.
Plus, they’re a super quick make, so no need to just stop at one. During the afternoon, you’ll be sewing the small size, but once you’ve made one, you can sew the larger two sizes and make a whole family of Open Wides!
*In order to make the best use of class time, please can you pre-cut 2 pieces from each fabric and the interfacing, 10-in wide and 7-in high and then iron the interfacing onto the wrong sides of the outer fabric.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine, including straight sewing foot and spare bobbins. Don’t forget your lead and foot pedal! If you’d rather hire one of our sewing machines for the workshop, so you can travel light, simply add this to your booking
Zip foot for your sewing machine
Basic sewing kit, including sharp fabric scissors/rotary cutter (as you prefer), pins and a stitch ripper
Fat quarter of patterned fabric for the outside* see above for prep
Fat quarter of contrasting plain or patterned lining fabric* see above for prep
Nylon zip at least 25cm long. Note - Mel will show you how to shorten zips, so it’s fine to bring one that’s longer than 25cm. It can be a contrasting colour
Scrap of fabric for the zip pull (or dive into our scrap basket)!
Cotton thread to coordinate with your fabrics or a neutral colour
25cm of Vilene Cotton G700 or H250 Vilene (depending on how sturdy you want your pouch to be)* see above for prep
It’s advisable to buy your fabrics beforehand to make the best use of workshop time. However, if there is anything you are missing, students can buy from the shop during the class.
Refreshments will be provided at the workshop. For details of car parks in Rochester, please look at our Visit Us page.
We do not send out email reminders to students before a workshop as all the information you’ll need is listed above, but if you have any questions, please look at our FAQs or call us on 01634 838880 before booking.
