join us for sewing inspiration
The big news is that all workshops are now bookable online. So, if you have a yen for booking a class in the wee small hours, you can do it. As new classes are added, you’ll find them all on our SHOP page.
All information you need, plus a list of materials needed, is included in the workshop listing. Once you have booked online, you’ll receive an email confirmation of your booking.
Obviously there are no shipping costs with workshops. If you’d like to add additional products to your basket with your booking, that’s fine too. (Normal shipping costs will apply to products). Or you can pick-up in store for free.
You’re also welcome to book classes in-store and by phone.
GENERAL INFO
When you come to one of our workshops, you’ll meet like-minded people, kickstart your creativity, have fun and learn a new skill. Classes are open to all from 12 years (under 16s should be accompanied by an adult booking the class too). Please note our workshops are created for adults. We cannot provide additional support or 1:1 tuition for young stitchers, so you must ensure they have the necessary skills to join a workshop.
Class size varies between 5-8, depending on the topic. The minimum class size is usually 5 students.
We have topics for all levels, including complete beginners. Not sure what level of course to take? Read the end section or call us for advice. (Please note that as we're a busy shop, we can respond to phone calls faster than email / social media messages/DMs). Shown below are just some of the workshops we’ve taught.
FAQs / LEVELS
Beginners - suitable for all, with no previous knowledge of patchwork and quilting. We’ll explain all the processes! Note: for machine-sewn classes you must be familiar sewing on a sewing machine (ie. confident threading a machine, filling bobbins, straight stitching with an even tension etc) before you come on the course. If not, please sign up first for Getting to Know my Sewing Machine.
All levels - simple techniques suitable for all levels of experience. On 1 day courses, tutors concentrate on the specific technique (usually the quilt top) and not all aspects of making a quilt. (For complete beginners, sign up for a beginners course such as: The Packhouse Quilt, Start at the Very Beginning, Snake Charmer, or Patchwork Weekender etc as you’ll learn basic quilt making processes and make a finished quilt.
Intermediate - students should have been quiltmaking on their own or have completed a beginners’ class to be familiar with the general basis of patchwork. Students should be competent machine sewers and have experience rotary cutting.
WORKSHOPS ON DEMAND and requests taken!
Alternatively, if you have a group of friends and wish to come on a workshop together, we can schedule a date just for you. For this type of workshop-on-demand, we need a minimum of 5-6 students depending on the class. At Hometown, we believe strongly in the benefits and camaraderie of group learning. However, if you’d rather have a 1:1 session, the fees would be around £200 for a one-day workshop (5 hours) or around £110 for a 1/2 day class (2.5 hours). Please ask us for more details.
CLASS COSTS AND DISCOUNTS
At HOMETOWN we aim to keep the cost of classes as affordable as possible as we want to encourage everyone to sew. If you want a course to run, please book early! We regularly benchmark our prices against other quilt shops and sewing cafes and we know other venues which charge up to £90 for day classes and £120 for Beginners’ quilt courses of a similar length. On certain courses, you can pay in instalments; please ask for details.
If courses are full, or you’re interested in a future date for a class please give us your email as this really helps us to schedule a new date, subject to tutor availability. In this case we contact those on the waiting list first with the new dates. All other booking conditions are shown at the bottom of the page.
Sewing machines: we have several sewing machines available, if you wish to travel light. These must be booked in advance. The charge is £5 per class or longer course. Please add this to your booking if needed.
SAVING YOU MONEY: HOMETOWN HAS THE FOLLOWING SCHEMES YOU CAN USE:
Cutting equipment discount - students booking on any courses are entitled to a £5 discount if they buy any combination of a self-healing mat, rotary cutter, ruler or blades totalling £40 or more (in one purchase), within 1 month of their workshop.
Loyalty Card - each time you spend £15 on products in-store or online, you’ll receive a Loyalty Card stamp. Redeem a full card of stamps for free fabric, a book of your choice or a pattern or jigsaw. Yay more fabric and free stuff!
