Thursday 20 Feb and 6 March

Tutor: Marion Haslam

Level: All Levels

2 session workshop - session 1 :10.30-4.30pm, session 2: 2.00-5.00pm (1-1/2 day class)

Too much fabric? Too little time? Join Marion on this 2-part workshop and sew patchwork and quilt it in manageable bite-size pieces. It’s also a great opportunity for using up odd scraps of fabric left over from other projects (or treasured fabrics which are piling up in your stash!).  This is an ideal introduction to scrap quilting and is a great skill builder.

You’ll piece and quilt blocks during the first session, using a technique known as Quilt-as-you-go. Marion will show you several pattern and technique options. During the second session, you’ll learn how to join your blocks together to complete and finish the quilt. The break between the 2 sessions enables you to continue sewing your blocks at home. The finished quilt can vary between 90 and 120cm square. This is a good size for a cot/playmat or lap/sofa quilt. Once you’ve mastered this technique you can then sew even larger quilts in future.

Machine sewn and suitable for all levels of quiltmaker. Students should be a competent machine stitcher (sewing in a straight line with an even tension). If not, why not refresh your skills on our ‘Getting to Know my Sewing Machine workshop’?

Please bring to the workshop:

  • Sewing machine. Don’t forget the foot pedal, ¼ inch foot, spare bobbins, instruction book etc. If you have one, please bring your machine’s walking foot. As you’ll be doing a lot of sewing, please put a new needle in the machine before this project

  • Rotary cutter, cutting board and ruler. If you have them, square acrylic rulers 8x8in or larger are very useful

  • Basic sewing kit including sharp fabric scissors, pins and a stitch ripper

Ÿ        Plus

  • Cotton quilt fabrics - any strips of fabric at least 1 x 6in (2½ x 15cm) or larger can be used. You can sew a real mixture of colours, patterns and plains and any scale of print. If you’d prefer to use a single colour, eg blue, you’ll need varying shades and tones for an effective quilt. It’s an ideal technique for using leftovers, so fill a bag with at least 2m of your fabrics. A Jelly Roll can also be used, together with other strips in a variety of sizes. This quantity is sufficient for a 90x90cm quilt. Increase quantities by 50% for a larger quilt

  • 50cm of plain/plainish cotton fabric for sashing blocks together for the second class. (1m for a larger quilt)

  • 1m of 115cm wide patterned or plainish cotton fabric for backing (1.25m for a larger quilt)

  • 1m of 115cm wide cotton or cotton/polyester wadding (1.25m for a larger quilt)

  • Thread to tone with your backing fabric. Please prepare a full bobbin before the class

If there is anything you’re missing, you’re welcome to buy fabrics, threads and quilt rulers etc from the store. Remember, you’ll receive a stamp on your loyalty card for every £15 of purchases. At this class you’re also welcome to dive into Hometown’s scrap fabrics too.

Refreshments will be provided.
