Tutor: Marion Haslam

Level: confident beginners/all levels

Is it possible to sew a patchwork quilt top in just a few hours? Oh, yes, it is! Join Marion for a morning of super fast sewing. Of course there’s still time for a cuppa and quilty chat, but you’ll be amazed how quickly you can turn a jelly roll into a quilt top ready for quilting. This is perfect for quilters wanting to sew a fast and fun patchwork quilt using precut 2-1/2-in strips. You’ll also be shown a couple of design options that will also give you some rotary practice if you’d like some. Machine sewn.

You can work with a full jelly roll for a bed size quilt or a half-jelly / Sweet Treats (ideal for making a bed/table runner or lap quilt). You can obviously make the quilt larger with borders. This would make a lovely handmade present in jiffy-quick time. Students will quilt and finish the quilt in their own time at home.

This workshop is ideal for students who have completed an introductory course (or have taught themselves at home) and who want to learn a new technique, or really anyone that wants to kick start their quilting in the new year!

Plus if you’d like to make it a whole day of sewing, perhaps adding a border to your new quilt top, you can stay and stitch in our workroom, untutored in the afternoon at no extra cost.

Equipment and material needed:

  • Sewing machine. (You must know how to thread it, wind the bobbin and straight stitch with an even tension). Remember the foot pedal, a straight sewing or ¼in foot, spare bobbin, instruction booklet etc. Put in a new needle before this workshop - it needs to be sharp!

  • Basic sewing kit containing sharp fabric scissors, pencil, pins and a stitch ripper

  • Rotary cutter, cutting board and quilt ruler at least 6x18-in long is useful for some of the design options, but we also have some spares for you to share. As a student you’ll receive a discount if you buy rotary equipment before or during your workshop

  • Cotton thread to coordinate with your fabrics or a neutral colour

  • Jelly roll (min 40 strips) or a half Jelly roll (min 20 strips). Note: the Jelly rolls should be of a full collection of fabrics for variety (by Moda etc). The Jelly rolls that Hobby Craft sell are not suitable as they contain only a few fabric patterns. Or, make your own Jelly roll by accurately cutting 42 strips of fabrics from your stash with a rotary cutter. Or use 2 Sweet Treat packs, cut into Jelly strips. Each strip should measure 2-1/2-in x width of fabric/pre-cut. If making your own Jelly, the fabrics should be pre-cut BEFORE the workshop to save time

  • 25cm of a coordinating plain (or almost plain fabric to coordinate with your Jelly roll), or a complementary Mini Charm pack

  • Note: Marion can advise on quantities for the following, based on your sewn quilt layout: wadding, backing fabric, binding fabric and thread for quilting.

If there is anything you’re missing, you can buy Jelly Rolls, thread and haberdashery etc from the store during the morning.

Refreshments are provided at each workshop.
